3 Executives Name Their Best Workforce Technology

An associate communication app, AI-based falls prevention tool, and a payroll and human resources planning tool are engaging workers.

In a recent Senior Housing News article, executives of three providers that differ in size have named the technology that brought their biggest workforce solutions. “New Tech Helps Revera, Asbury, Carlton Meet Workforce Challenges” shares the ways the winning systems improved staff members’ daily work.

Asbury Communities (8 communities; nonprofit):

  • Challenge: At LeadingAge CAST Patron Asbury Communities, 59% of associates did not have access to desktop computers and email.
  • Solution: Asbury partnered with redeapp, a mobile workforce communication platform, to develop an associate app that lets management and front-line staff communicate directly. They made it highly user friendly, with only three taps needed to download, set up, and use the app.
  • Outcomes: Initially, 61% of the 2,400 associates downloaded the app. More than 308,000 messages were sent and received through the app, and those messages had a 20% higher open rate than emails did. Now, after tweaks, app usage continues to rise for scheduling shifts and time off. Associates are also using the app to take surveys and participate in Asbury’s employee recognition program.

Carlton Senior Living (11 communities; for-profit):

  • Challenge: Carlton sought a proactive falls-prevention solution.
  • Solution: SafelyYou uses video surveillance and artificial intelligence technology to identify falls in memory care residents. Then an occupational therapist reviews the footage. Together with the community manager, they make a care plan for the resident. The occupational therapist’s support is said to have empowered the team to proactively identify residents’ fall risks.
  •  Outcomes: At Carlton, 89% of its 200-plus memory care residents participate in the service. After three years, falls are 31% lower and emergency medical services calls are down 61%. SafelyYou prevented some Emergency Room visits—and costs to residents and families—by noting when residents were on the floor but may have lowered themselves rather than falling.

Revera (500 communities in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.; for-profit):

  •  Challenge: Revera needed to update payroll, invoicing processes, and human resources processes tools. The payroll system needed to handle more than 220 collective bargaining agreements in Revera’s Canadian platform.
  • Solution: Workday is a cloud-based enterprise resource planning tool that handles payroll planning, integrates with human resources systems to let Revera better manage an employee’s life cycle, and makes invoice processing more efficient. Revera emphasized Workday’s time-saving features to employees and job candidates.
  • Outcomes: Revera launched Workday across the Canadian platform, which includes 175 sites and more than 20,000 employees, in September. Around 12.5% of its employees are said to be heavy users in upper management. Revera now is planning ways to use Workday’s data and features to bring further efficiencies.
