Majd’s Message: CAST Co-Led A Study Leading to a Report to Congress

Center Post

In his October message, Majd Alwan describes a new by HHS based on a Study co-led by CAST and NORC, a research organization at the University of Chicago. He also looks forward to the upcoming fall meeting of the CAST Commissioners and the LeadingAge Annual Meeting.

You have probably already heard the news about a new Report to Congress by HHS based on a study co-led by CAST and NORC, a research organization at the University of Chicago. The report provides a detailed discussion of aging services technologies (ASTs), barriers to the development and adoption of ASTs and strategies to address those barriers.

We’re very proud of this report, which was mandated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. We’re hopeful that its findings will set the stage for future policy initiatives to promote more widespread adoption of ASTs.

The report has been disseminated by LeadingAge and NORC and in such publications as Senior Housing News, the Arizona Republic and Aging in Place Technology Watch. During the CAST Commission meeting on Oct. 20, we’ll be talking about how to disseminate the Report to Congress even more widely so more people understand how ASTs can help older adults and people with disabilities achieve and maintain maximum physical function, live as independently as possible and participate in and contribute to society.

2012 LeadingAge Annual Meeting Events

In addition to discussing the Report to Congress, the Commission will hear from CAST Chair Mark McClellan when it convenes in Denver before the LeadingAge Annual Meeting and Exposition. Dr. McClellan will discuss health and payment reform, opportunities for LTPAC providers and the federal policy outlook for the coming year, in light of the recent Supreme Court decision to uphold the Affordable Care Act and the upcoming national election.

Once the Annual Meeting begins on Oct. 21, LeadingAge members will find a full schedule of CAST events in which to participate. For example:

  • CAST’s 5 conference sessions will focus on the role that technology can play in an organization’s operations, strategic planning, quality improvement and person-centered care.
  • The Idea House returns to the Annual Meeting again this year. You’ll find an array of design and technology applications on display in 4 unit types: independent living, assisted living and 2 skilled nursing suites. You can read more about the exhibit in LeadingAge magazine. Better, yet, stop by the exhibit when you have a free moment.

CAST Case Study

Each month, Tech Time highlights one case study from PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE: Developing Technology-Enabled Long-Term Services and Supports for a New Population of Older Adults. This month's case study is about Selfhelp Community Services, a LeadingAge member and CAST sponsor in New York. I hope you will read this case study to discover how you might integrate some of its lessons into your own planning.

CAST and Member News

I want to take this opportunity to extend hearty congratulations to Stratis Health, Minnesota’s Quality Improvement Organization, on its new grant from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

CAST and Aging Services of Minnesota will be collaborating on the project, which will help nursing homes in Minnesota use health information technology to improve care transitions. In other funding news, Minnesota and Arizona members will be interested in two funding opportunities designed to promote the exchange of patient health information.

I also urge you to read about the great things that CAST sponsors and members are doing in their own communities and markets. Over the past month, 7 LeadingAge members took top honors in a Technology Competition sponsored by McKnight’s Long-Term Care News. Senior Housing Forum wrote a very flattering profile of CAST Sponsor Front Porch. And several of our business sponsors and members have received media attention. We congratulate all of these members on their achievements.

Finally, I call your attention to CAST’s new membership categories. Because so many CAST supporters also support LeadingAge, CAST and LeadingAge are consolidating their programs to enhance the benefits that CAST Sponsors and Members receive.

As always, please contact me with any comments or questions.
