2020 Year in Review: Our Collective Voice
Throughout the year, LeadingAge, state associations, and members used our collective voice to respond to the pandemic and fight for urgently needed COVID protections.
We honored the elders we’ve lost to the coronavirus on the Global Ageing Network’s Day of Remembrance, which resulted in hundreds of photos and more than 10,000 social media impressions. On Direct Care Worker Appreciation Day, our membership made an overwhelming show of love and thanks for care workers on social media by searching #Hearts4CareWorkers.
Our LeadingAge community influenced bipartisan COVID relief packages and other legislation with more than 200 meetings with members of Congress; 2 national days of action, 30+ action alerts, and 51,000+ messages to Congress. The Act for Older Adults Campaign called on policymakers to take Five Essential Actions for older adults and care workers across the continuum. LeadingAge policy experts consulted with federal agencies to ensure members received $20 billion in Provider Relief Funds, $250 million in relief for HUD-assisted senior housing, NASEM nursing home quality study, and much more.
In support of advocacy efforts and to combat negative headlines, LeadingAge has aggressively pursued telling the real story of aging services providers. We’ve become a key source for influential nation media outlets through a steady stream of proactive outreach and messaging, including dozens of press releases, letters, situation reports, infographics, pitches, op-ed submissions, and press conferences featuring state leaders and members. LeadingAge’s Katie Smith Sloan, state partners, and members have spoken out in outlets like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, Kaiser Health News, ABC News, NBC News, McKnight’s Long Term Care, and more.
And we’re not stopping now. We continue to advocate for relief for aging services and we are ready to work with the Biden-Harris team to tackle key aging services issues.
