Message From Katie: Let’s Focus on the Future
LeadingAge president and CEO Katie Smith Sloan wrote a new message to members:

LeadingAge members know first-hand that those who are black or brown make up more than three-fifths (59%) of our direct care workforce. Together with those who are black or brown and are receiving long-term services and supports, these workers are affected disproportionately by COVID-19.

We may not be able to correct the underlying causes of these COVID-related disparities, but we ought to do more than wring our hands. We can act alone or in concert with others. But act we must. Our moral leadership in the communities we serve is absolutely vital to ending 2 inseparable, heartless pandemics: the COVID-19 pandemic and our pandemic of racism.

We urgently need another snapshot of the current state of personal protective equipment and testing among our membership. Please answer these fast questions to help us assure the reality on the ground is reflected clearly in the media. Thank you for your input. It’s critical as we continue to shape the narrative around what aging services need most in our fight against the pandemic.

Fighting for Members and Older Adults: Congressional Advocacy
LeadingAge continues to advocate for our members to ensure that you have the resources you need to protect residents, clients, and staff from this deadly virus. We are ramping up advocacy work even more during June and July to urge that Congress’s next relief package includes a range of strong and necessary supports for older adults and their care providers.

LeadingAge policy staff is leveraging the access and influence we’ve cultivated in Washington, D.C. to fight for members during the pandemic. In addition to our regular advocacy work on Capitol Hill, members have already joined us for over 20 meetings with congressional offices. Yesterday, we sent a letter filled with robust and detailed asks to Senate and House leadership, and a press release to share our demands with the media. This morning, McKnight’s covered our asks: “LeadingAge urges Congress to adopt comprehensive COVID-19 relief package for older adults, care workers.”

We’ll begin rolling out a new advocacy campaign over the next several weeks and hope that you will join our efforts. Together, we can influence this next critical legislation to ensure that our Five Essential Actions are realized in support of aging services providers and millions of older adults.

Our policy team will share details of our asks to Congress on upcoming live daily updates. Register to join us at 3:30 p.m. ET today.
