October 24, 2019 Washington D.C. -- The proliferation of health information exchange networks and entities, a result of ever-growing availability of secure electronic data transfer, presents a substantial opportunity for long-term and post-acute care (LTPAC) providers. That’s why the LeadingAge Center for Aging Services Technologies (CAST) today launches the Health Information Exchange (HIE) selection tool, a multi-part resource that will help care providers understand, plan for, select, and implement those technology solutions best-suited to meet their needs.

As providers of a wide array of services, from rehabilitation and home health, to supportive social services, all of which have significant impact on health outcomes, health care resource utilization and costs, long-term and post-acute care (LTPAC) providers are key players in the health care ecosystem. Yet, LTPAC providers, unlike their acute-care counterparts, have been slow to engage with and contribute to HIEs, for a variety of reasons. These range from a lack of awareness about emerging HIE networks to uncertainty regarding networks’ ability to connect with the provider’s electronic health records and questions about the value-added services that HIEs offer.

“We believe that HIEs can provide significant value to long-term care providers. This new CAST resource aims to be a resource that can help encourage HIE adoption by offering facts and insights about the current HIE landscape. That way, providers can make informed decisions when planning for, selecting, and engaging with HIE entities and networks,” said Majd Alwan, Ph.D., senior vice president of technology at LeadingAge, and executive director of CAST.

The HIE selection tool includes a white paper, an interactive guide, an online selection tool and matrix of existing HIEs that chose to contribute information, and three provider case studies, and is available free of charge to both LeadingAge members and nonmembers. CAST worked in partnership with the Strategic Health Information Exchange Collaborative (SHIEC) on this new portfolio.

The HIE toolkit is one of CAST’s eight online technology selection tools, each of which includes a white paper, interactive guide, selection matrix, online selection tool, and provider case studies. These comprehensive resources help providers understand, plan for, select, implement, and adopt the appropriate technology. For more information on the technology selection suite of tools, see this.
