March 4, 2020 Washington D.C. -- LeadingAge, the association of mission-driven, aging-focused service providers, responds to CMS Actions to Address Spread of Coronavirus issued Mar. 04, 2020.

Katie Smith Sloan, president and CEO, said: “LeadingAge and our members are committed to providing the highest quality nursing home care. We appreciate today’s effort by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to prioritize the needs of older adults who are at greatest risk. Nursing homes provide crucial care for older adults; the agency’s nimble response and attention to this public health emergency is welcomed.

This is a dynamic and fast-moving situation. We will carefully review the details of the CMS directives announced this afternoon. They appear to represent an opportunity for much-needed collaboration with surveyors to achieve our joint goals of infection containment and high-quality care. We look forward to continuing dialogue with CMS and other policymakers to address outstanding issues including staffing and paying for the additional costs associated with 2019 Novel Coronavirus.

Finally, we urge policymakers to address the needs of older adults living in other congregate and community-based settings. We need to do all we can to protect older adults and those who support them in all places where they live and gather.

We strongly encourage LeadingAge members to use the resources provided by CMS and CDC to thoroughly review their infection control and emergency preparedness processes.”
