In its Frequently Asked Questions from the Office of Multifamily Housing, HUD recommends owners look to certain publications for guidance on cleaning and disinfecting. HUD has also produced a webinar on the topic, and more recently issued resource, Medical Waste Disposal: Best Practices for Owners of Multifamily Properties.

HUD urges communities to use the CDC’s Environmental Cleaning and Disinfection Recommendations, which provides recommendations on the cleaning and disinfection of rooms or areas of those with suspected or with confirmed COVID-19 have visited. For example, according to this CDC guidance, if it has been more than seven days since a person with suspected/confirmed COVID-19 visited or used the facility, additional cleaning and disinfection is not necessary.

The HUD FAQ also recommends joint guidance from the EPA and CDC, Guidance for Cleaning and Disinfecting Public Spaces, Workplaces, Businesses, Schools and Homes. This guidance includes a helpful decision map for cleaning and disinfecting based on three steps: making a cleaning and disinfecting plan, implementing the plan, and maintaining and revising the plan.

A third piece of guidance HUD recommends for multifamily housing is another piece of CDC guidance, Disinfecting Your Facility if Someone is Sick, which provides information on how to clean and disinfect facilities, including how to clean and disinfect clothing and other laundry, surfaces, and electronics. This guidance also discusses Alternative disinfection methods, and says that the  efficacy of alternative disinfection methods, such as ultrasonic waves, high intensity UV radiation, and LED blue light against COVID-19 virus is not known.

In March, HUD also published its own guidance, Medical Waste Disposal: Best Practices for Owners of Multifamily Properties. This resource covers medical waste from a housing provider perspective and provides links to guidance from every state as well as federal agencies on medical waste disposal.

Another helpful resource on the topic is a webinar HUD produced in early May, the recording of which can be found here and the powerpoint can be found here.
