Data analytic technologies have become even more important during the COVID-19 pandemic. They can help a provider know which residents are at higher risk for contracting the virus, identify the residents most likely to have poor health outcomes, and plan a proactive approach to care.
Two recent events by LeadingAge and CAST have brought members key information on use of telehealth and thermal cameras during the pandemic and beyond:
For extensive resources on technology applications and telehealth in the pandemic, be sure to download the new LeadingAge Pandemic Playbook.
LeadingAge developed the Pandemic Playbook in response to a year that has challenged the operations, finances, creativity, and nimbleness of aging services providers. CAST contributed a full chapter on Technology Applications and Telehealth.
As the first COVID-19 vaccines and new therapeutics become available, it is critical for aging services providers to start planning now to deploy them. That was the message from CAST International Chair Mark McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., who spoke at the virtual CAST Commission meeting on Nov. 9, 2020.
The meeting covered COVID-19 and the road ahead, the future of payment reforms, and LeadingAge and CAST advocacy and accomplishments during the pandemic.

As the pandemic continues, robust Wi-Fi and staff support for residents new to technology have become important for senior living, says a recent guest column in McKnight’s Senior Living.
In the senior living industry where tech pilots do not always fly, an engagement tool introduced in 2020 has seen promising results. Several months in, older adults at Merrill Gardens are continuing to engage with the Google Nest Hub Max devices adapted for older adults.
As the pandemic continues, it is bringing innovation around resident security. In the recent McKnight’s Senior Living article "Focus On: Resident security," CAST Executive Director and LeadingAge Senior Vice President of Technology & Business Strategy Majd Alwan, Ph.D., addressed several new technologies.
A recent survey found that most LeadingAge members who provide affordable senior housing have strong concerns about their residents’ social isolation in the coming months. In addition, the internet access that can ease loneliness is a challenge for nearly 40% of residents.
For the first time, a majority of the nation’s 200 largest not-for-profit senior living organizations have adopted social connectedness/resident engagement technologies. Just over half are using health information exchange (HIE) technologies, and nearly one-third have adopted advanced analytic tools, the latest technology categories added this year.
