LeadingAge joins with more than 100 organizations who are in support of the Creating Opportunities Now for Necessary and Effective Care Technologies (CONNECT) for Health Act of 2019 (S. 2741) introduced by members of the Congressional Telehealth Caucus. The bipartisan legislation would promote the availability of telehealth, the use of technology services through the Medicare program, and improve care.

Technology is changing the way hospice care is delivered, with hospices using virtual reality to train staff and soothe patients, and telehealth to deliver palliative care to rural communities. A recent article in Hospice News describes how technologies such as predictive analytics, telemedicine systems, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality are being used.

In Arizona, Medicaid beneficiaries can now use an Uber or Lyft to get to the doctor's office. Arizona has become the first state to change Medicaid rules to make it easier for ride-sharing companies to provide non-emergency transportation. The idea is that better availability of rides will make it easier for beneficiaries to keep medical appointments.

 

As senior living facilities explore the best technologies for their residents, an upcoming luxury community in Manhattan provides inspiration. Maplewood Senior Living’s Inspir Carnegie Hill, a $300 million community, will include a technology suite called Alli. It will include smart-home tech such as Amazon’s Alexa, virtual reality, and fall-detection capabilities.
