LeadingAge CAST Supporter It's Never 2 Late (iN2L) and CAST Patron Front Porch are sharing the spotlight in the news.

iN2L, based in Centennial, CO, is dedicated to helping older adults realize the full benefits of today’s technology. Front Porch, based in Glendale, CA, offers retirement, active adult, affordable housing, and memory care communities, as well as care centers, throughout Arizona, California, Florida, and Louisiana.

Fighting Loneliness

The two organizations partnered to create a digital community to help alleviate residents’ loneliness, says a news release discussing a recent IBM study.
The study, "Loneliness and the aging population - how businesses and governments can address a looming crisis,” found a tremendous opportunity for new and existing organizations to create solutions that improve how older adults engage with the world. IBM used the Front Porch and iN2L collaboration as an example. The partnership enables older adults to come together online and use digital tools to support health, wellness, engagement, growth and learning.
“Siloed data sets are a constant challenge; pulling them together and making information meaningful, actionable and simple is a tremendous opportunity,” Kari Olson, Front Porch Chief Innovation and Technology Officer and CAST Commissioner was quoted as saying. "Ultimately we are creating a tipping point where we identify the best technologies that can meet the needs of older adults and help individuals live independently and well in the place they choose to call home."

Jakubowicz Joins iN2L

In other iN2L news, Dennis Jakubowicz has joined iN2L as the company's new sales and marketing vice president.
“Dennis is a recognized sales and business development leader in the (long-term care) market, and we are privileged to have him on our team,” said iN2L CEO Tom Bang, as reported in i Advance Senior Care. “As we continue to expand our product and services portfolio, Dennis’ expertise will aid us significantly in reaching residents, staff, and their families that benefit from iN2L’s numerous engagement and digital therapy technologies."
Jakubowicz previously served as senior vice president of LeadingAge Silver Partner with CAST Focus MatrixCare.

Front Porch Pilots Alexa’s Use in Retirement Communities

In addition, the MIT Technology Review recently profiled Front Porch for its pilot with Alexa. "The Octogenarians Who Love Amazon’s Alexa" says that Front Porch appears to be the first retirement community to study the technology’s impact in depth. The Front Porch Center for Innovation and Wellbeing, a technology outreach program, is leading the project.
Most residents in the pilot community, Carlsbad by the Sea in Carlsbad, CA, use their Echoes to check the time and set alarms, to listen to music and audiobooks, and to catch up on news, sports, and the weather. But Front Porch is teaching residents other Alexa functions, such as how to use voice commands to call and text family and friends.
Next, Front Porch will set up a two-month test so that Carlsbad by the Sea residents can use Alexa to control their room lights and temperature. Positive results may spark a rollout to other communities, encompassing more than 2,000 residents in the state.
Front Porch also hopes to shape the Alexa of the future so that it better meets the needs of older adults. For example, Amazon is considering a request from Front Porch to add an equalizer feature to address challenges that residents have in communicating with the device.
