On January 10, the Biden administration extended temporary protected status (TPS) for immigrants from Venezuela, Ukraine, El Salvador, and Sudan. Recipients of TPS from these countries will be able to renew their work permits for up to 18 months, the maximum duration permitted by law that protects immigrants from deportation to countries affected by conflict or natural disasters. The TPS designation is limited and does not extend to all immigrants from a specific nation; it applies only to individuals who meet specific criteria or who arrived within a designated time frame. Additionally, it does not prevent U.S. authorities from deporting individuals to those nations if they fail to qualify for protections or lose their eligibility. As of September 2025, there are 1.1 million immigrants who have been granted TPS living in the United States.
