The U.S. Senate voted on March 10, 2025 to confirm Lori M. Chavez-DeRemer as Secretary of Labor, on a vote of 67-32. Chavez-DeRemer served as Republican member of the U.S House of Representatives for Oregon’s 5th congressional district for one term (2023-2025) and sat on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Ms. Chavez-DeRemer has labor organization support, and while in Congress co-sponsored legislation to expand labor protections related to employees’ rights to organize and collectively bargain, though she stated during her confirmation process that she did so to ensure she would be part of congressional efforts to update labor laws.
Shortly after, on March 12, Senators voted 53-46 to confirm Keith Sonderling, President Trump’s choice for deputy secretary, the Labor Department’s second ranking official. Sonderling is experienced, as in 2020 the Senate confirmed Sonderling to be a Commissioner on the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and he also served in several roles at the Labor Department during the first Trump administration, including as deputy administrator of the Wage and Hour Division.
