A new study in Home Healthcare Now, dives into the prevalence of workplace violence (WPV) in the home health setting. Using a small survey sample capturing the frequency of WPV in organizations with written policies and reporting procedures, researchers found about a third of respondents experienced both verbal and emotional abuse daily, whereas 56.6% of participants reported physical violence at some point while working with their current agency. In most cases, patients were the primary perpetrators. While agencies had existing reporting policies, none of the participants reported incidents to management and 40% said management did not encourage reporting. This highlights systemic barriers to reporting. In April 2023, LeadingAge submitted comments to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regarding a future rules related to acts of violence in health care clearly stating that a “one size fits all” approach to workplace safety does not work for aging services providers, especially those that serve individuals in their homes.
