Beginning December 16, 2025 the House Committee on Financial Services, which has jurisdiction over public and private housing, will host a two-day markup to address affordable housing.
Committee Chairman French Hill (R-AR) announced plans on December 7, saying in a statement that the committee will “advance solutions to tackle housing cost and access challenges for American families, homeowners, and renters. Next year, we look forward to working with our Senate colleagues to send a bill to the president’s desk that reflects the views of both chambers and leads to more affordable choices for America’s homeowners and renters.”
The markup comes after the release, also on December 7, of the most recent version of the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), negotiated between House and Senate leaders. The NDAA did not include housing provisions from the Senate’s bipartisan ROAD to Housing Act, which passed the Senate on October 9. LeadingAge supports that legislation.
The most recent sweeping affordable housing reform legislation passed by Congress was the “Housing Opportunity Through Modernization Act (HOTMA)” in 2016. Since then, LeadingAge has been involved in legislative discussions and initiatives to further affordable housing policy.
LeadingAge will stay engaged on the bills to be considered by the House Financial Services Committee on December 16 and 17, which include some proposals that would expand affordable housing for older adults, a LeadingAge priority.
