Entrepreneur in Residence Program
Products and services geared to the needs and interests of older adults and the people who serve them is a rich and growing market opportunity–but, for a variety of reasons, these offerings often fall short. LeadingAge’s Entrepreneur in Residence program, built on the concept of human-centered design thinking, aims to address current gaps in innovation development.

About the Program
The Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) program, announced in Spring 2026, supports the development of aging-services focused innovations and entrepreneurs’ needs by matching early and mid-stage start ups with LeadingAge member communities for an immersive two weeks in community.
By shadowing staff working in a range of departments and jobs, engaging with residents, and participating in the ebb and flow of daily life, the EIR program provides invaluable experience that includes:
- Insights gained come from outside eyes looking in
- Storytelling born of testing, sharing innovative practices and tapping resident creativity
- Fellowship and fun as communities showcase their offerings, residents share ideas, and entrepreneurs test their products and services.
Innovation is a core function at LeadingAge—not a nice to do but a need to do. Once innovation becomes a core function, the possibilities expand quickly. Dream big, test thoughtfully, refine continuously, and then focus.
Program Overview
Over a two-week period, entrepreneurs selected via a competitive application process live at or visit on a regular basis, a LeadingAge member host. Experiences may vary depending on the host and EIR goals, preferences and needs.
EIR Lead
Michael Hughes, vice president of strategic growth and partnership, joined LeadingAge in 2026 following several years at a member organization where he spearheaded a similar program. As EIR program lead, Hughes reviews applications, oversees participant relationships, builds channel partner connections, and refines the initiative with the goal of continuous improvement.
Applications and Profiles
Participation for entrepreneurs is application only; compliance with participating member organization background checks and legal requirements is required. Accepted EIRs agree to submit a post-experience report summarizing the impact on their work.
Member organizations must complete a profile document that is used in the matching process.
Applications are reviewed monthly; all information is confidential.
Email Michael Hughes at MHughes@LeadingAge.org for more information.
