In December 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved Perfomant to begin a nationwide new hospice audit under the Recovery Audit Contractor responsibilities. The audit will look at Extended Length of Stay: Medical Necessity and Documentation Requirements to determine if billed hospice care with extended lengths of stay was reasonable and necessary. Claims with a “claim paid date” more than 3 years prior to the ADR date will be excluded from the audit. The audit will review all four hospice levels of care under REV codes: 0651- Routine Home Care, 0652- Continuous Home Care, 0655- Inpatient Respite Care, 0656- General Inpatient Care.
