In a January 27, 2026, letter from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Mehmet Oz to Governor Gavin Newsom, the administrator requested detailed information regarding program integrity, eligibility verification, and provider oversight within California’s Medi-Cal program. The letter lists over forty questions regarding program level oversight of fraud, waste, and abuse. The letter is mostly focused on Medi-Cal programs, including personal care and adult day among other though it does mention home health and hospice. It also poses the same questions about adult day and housing stabilization services that they are reviewing in Minnesota.
Gov. Newsom responded to the letter through a press release outlining how his administration has addressed fraud concerns regarding hospice. Gov. Newsom also filed a complaint in the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) accusing Administrator Oz of racial animus toward Armenian Americans.
A hearing is planned for Tuesday, February 3, at 10:30a ET in the House Energy and Commerce Committee, titled Common Schemes, Real Harm: Examining Fraud in Medicare and Medicaid. LeadingAge will cover the hearing and report out.
