The House of Representatives’ Committee on Financial Services, which oversees federal affordable housing programs, is holding a September 16, 2026 markup on several bills impacting housing for older adults.
A markup is the first step towards bringing legislation to a vote on the House floor, and this particular markup is one of the chamber’s last to-dos for members before they depart from the nation’s capital to campaign in their districts ahead of the mid-term elections.
Though the official agenda had not yet been posted at the time of publication, LeadingAge was able to preview the bills that will be considered during the markup, which will be led by Committee Chairman French Hill (R-AR). There are several bills included that LeadingAge supports:
- HR 10325, introduced by Committee Ranking Member Maxine Waters (D-CA), which would increase the amount of funding that the Federal Home Loan Banks would have to dedicate towards affordable housing.
- HR 4936, introduced by Representatives Zach Nunn (R-IA) and Jim Himes (D-CT), which would create an interagency task force to evaluate trends in payment scams on older adults and develop concrete strategies to prevent them.
- HR 5889, introduced by Representative Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), which would authorize (but not fund) a support helpline for residents of federally subsidized housing facing eviction.
One bill notably absent from the markup list is the LeadingAge-supported Build Housing Affordably Act (HR 9311) introduced by Representatives Mike Flood (R-NE) and Maggie Goodlander (D-NH), which would streamline certain infeasible domestic procurement requirements on housing developments established through Build America, Buy America (BABA).
LeadingAge will continue to raise our members’ concerns around BABA with our partners in Congress.
