A Kaiser Family Foundation June 11, 2025 issue brief examines characteristics of the 10 million Medicare beneficiaries in rural areas and how the proposed budget reconciliation bill could affect their access to care. In addition to comprehensive charts and maps of the population, KFF provides key takeaways, including: most beneficiaries have incomes less than $20,000 a year making them more likely to be enrolled in Medicaid; they also have larger shares of food insecurity and health care cost-related problems; and one-third reported 5 or more chronic conditions.

Aging services providers are critical resources to Medicare beneficiaries in rural areas. The risk of reduced Medicaid funds will have a tremendous impact on rural aging services providers.
