In a July 9, 2026 letter to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Senators James Lankford (R-OK), Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Representatives Greg Murphy (R-NC) and Lou Correa (D-CA) urged the establishment of reporting requirements in the hospice program to monitor physician-assisted suicide for discrimination against individuals with disabilities, older adults, and other vulnerable populations. Federal law prohibits the federal government from spending any money on medically assisted suicide.
In addition for monitoring for discrimination, the lawmakers ask for reporting requirements on proper disposal of unused medication and prevention of drug diversion, insurance denials of life-sustaining medical that offer to cover physician-assisted suicide drugs instead, drug complications, consistentcy of drugs prescribed “off label” for use in physician-assisted suicide, and compliance with federal restrictions on using funds, directly or indirectly, for health care items or services for physician-assisted suicide.
