December 15, 2023 Washington, DC — Statement from Katie Smith Sloan, president and CEO, LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit providers of aging services, on the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s announcement of $40 million to support the Service Coordinators in Multifamily Housing program:
“Service coordinators are a critical source of support and resources for older adults living in affordable housing communities. Research—and the experience of our nonprofit members who provide federally assisted homes to seniors with low-incomes—show that residents are better able to age in community with improved health and overall well-being thanks to the work of service coordinators.
This funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development follows ten years without a round of money for service coordinator program grants. This is a tremendous advocacy success, and a true win for our members, their staff, and most importantly, for residents. Now, at last, we have a chance to build the ranks of invaluable service coordinators. The money cannot come soon enough.”
The Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) posted by HUD will fund approximately 160 Service Coordination programs across the country. Preliminary information is available here.
