Each year, International Active Aging Week shines a light on the possibilities, passions, and power of older adults. From October 6–12, 2025, this year’s event offers a global platform to reframe thinking about the abilities of people over the age of 65 by focusing not on limitations, but on opportunities—championing a vision of aging defined by engagement and purpose.
LeadingAge is proud to serve as an official partner of Active Aging Week through a meaningful collaboration with the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA). We aim to amplify the message that aging is a journey enriched by movement, connection, curiosity, and contribution–and encourage LeadingAge members to engage over the seven-day event.
Showcasing LeadingAge Member Innovation
To spotlight how our members bring creativity and care to this celebration, we’re highlighting past Active Aging Week successes from several LeadingAge non-profit member organizations. Their work illustrates the power of well thought out programs to promote wellness across physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions of life.
Westminster Canterbury-Shenandoah Valley: Wellness for Every Dimension
At Westminster Canterbury-Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, VA, Active Aging Week in 2024 was a celebration of whole-person wellness across every level of living. New offerings like aqua zumba, line dancing, and an obstacle course got everyone moving with laughter and teamwork. Tai chi self-defense forms added both physical challenge and practical value.
Meanwhile, the community’s gratitude tree and blessing of the animals deepened connections to self and spirit. Lifelong learning sessions and archive tours kept minds engaged, while a fall fun day—complete with games, food, and flowers—brought everyone together to share in community joy.
The week reinforced that wellness isn’t just an activity—it’s a mindset supported by community, creativity, and care.
Covenant Living of Golden Valley: Move Your Way
At Covenant Living of Golden Valley, Minneapolis, MN, last year’s Active Aging Week was a vibrant celebration of the many dimensions of wellness—guided by the theme “Move Your Way.” Residents were encouraged to engage in programs tailored to their abilities, interests, and goals, fostering a strong sense of inclusion and community.
Physical activities scheduled throughout the week promoted health and vitality, including chair yoga, chair aerobics, cardio drumming, and a scenic historical nature walk. These offerings empowered residents to stay active in ways that worked for them—reinforcing that wellness isn’t one-size-fits-all. A special brain boosting brunch, developed in collaboration with dining staff, featured foods known for their cognitive benefits—nourishing both body and brain. Residents also had the chance to explore their interests through tech talks, fall crafts, and live entertainment, while a Dakota Cultural Appreciation event added depth and meaning to the week.
Through it all, Covenant Living of Golden Valley embodied the spirit of Active Aging Week—proving that age is just a number when it comes to living vibrantly. Their commitment to diverse programming continues to inspire residents to stay active, curious, and connected.
Presbyterian Senior Living – Pine Run Village: Camaraderie, Can-Do Spirit, and Competition
In Doylestown, PA, Pine Run Village brought their “3 C’s” approach—camaraderie, can-do spirit, and competition—to life through their Pine Run Villager Games in 2023. Residents participated in eight team-based events including bocce, cornhole, pumpkin chucking, and water volleyball.
With over 50 residents competing and many more cheering from the sidelines, the community buzzed with energy and enthusiasm. The celebration ended with an awards ceremony recognizing all participants and highlighting a few standout residents for their grit and joy-filled participation.
These games captured the true spirit of Active Aging Week—encouraging fun, friendship, and a holistic embrace of lifelong vibrancy.
