On February 26, LeadingAge issued an action alert to urge policymakers to protect and preserve affordable housing for older adults. The alert focuses on three immediate threats: need for a final fiscal year 2025 HUD appropriations bill with adequate, uninterrupted funding; the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) plan to cut HUD staff by 50%; and, the delay of funding to new Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program awardees and the planned revocation of multifamily housing preservation funds awarded through HUD’s Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP).
When reaching out to congressional offices via the action alert, providers are strongly encouraged to share their story. Sharing information about your affordable housing community, including where it is, the residents you serve, the services you connect residents to, and the number of older adults on your community’s waitlist is very important for senators and representatives to understand as they consider whether and how they will weigh in to impact the fate of these threats.
Aging services stakeholders are urged to take action today.
