U.S. Senators Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Peter Welch (D-Vt.) on June 10 introduced the Higher Wages for American Workers Act, which would increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 per hour. Congress last raised the federal minimum wage in 2009.
If the bill is enacted into law, the increase would be effective on January 1 of the first year that begins after the date of enactment, and the federal minimum wage would increase with inflation in subsequent years. According to data from the National Conference of State Legislatures, 11 states and the District of Columbia have state-level minimum wage requirements of $15 or greater.
