On August 6, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the launch of a new initiative aimed at educating the public and providing vital reporting resources to individuals and families who may have been impacted by hospice fraud. The initiative includes public service announcements such as radio spots and billboards in Los Angeles, community forums and stakeholder engagement opportunities, and a web portal for reporting suspected fraud. In 2022, the California auditor released a report finding that weak oversight of hospice licensure in the state had created opportunities for large-scale fraud and abuse. This sparked nationwide concerns about fraud in hospice and led to LeadingAge’s 34 recommendations to policymakers to improve hospice program integrity. Three years later, program integrity concerns remain and have started to trickle into home health as well. This most recent step will help Los Angeles take local action against fraudulent providers in addition to national efforts.
