The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) program is going paperless. After March 1, 2026, CLIA will be a completely electronic system and laboratories and providers that perform lab testing, including point-of-care testing done under a CLIA certificate of waiver, must switch to email notifications to receive CLIA fee coupons and certificates.
To switch to electronic notifications, providers must email their CLIA State Agency contact. The CLIA Application for Certification Form CMS-116 is available here. More information is available on the CLIA page of the CMS website, and CMS has developed a toolkit to assist labs and providers in this transition.
