The Department of Justice (DOJ) in an April 2, 2026 press release announced the arrest of eight health care providers, including three nurses, a chiropractor, and a psychologist, as part of a scheme to defraud Medicare out of $50 million through running a sham hospice and enrolling individuals without terminal illnesses.
Dubbed “Operation Never Say Die,” the DOJ’s effort was conducted in coordination with Vice President Vance’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.
One indictment states that the non-death discharge rate for one of the hospices in question was approximately 85%, nearly five times the national average of 17.2% from 2021. Another defendant was legally barred from participating in the Medicare program but used her husband’s name as CEO but personally owned and exercised operating control of three separate hospices.
