In a June 30, 2026 letter to New York Attorney General Letitia James, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) accused the New York Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) of underperformance and announced a pause in funding for the unit. Earlier this month a similar letter was sent to Hawai’i, decertifying their MFCU for poor performance. This is reflective of ongoing attention from the administration to Medicaid fraud and state activities to prevent and prosecute potential fraudsters, as outlined in their May 13 letter to all states.
