Senator Mike Braun (R-IN) held a Senate Special Committee on Aging field hearing on “Economic Challenges and Opportunities for Older Americans” on August 22 in Indianapolis. An important focus was workforce shortages across the economy. Representatives from law enforcement, farming, and franchise businesses talked about their problems recruiting when there are not enough applicants and the importance of training.

One speaker from a national nonprofit organization discussed the importance of recognizing older individuals as potential employees. Referring to herself and Baby Boomers generally, she said: “we are people who want to work and can work.” She explained the need for training, noting it can be worth the investment for employers.

Braun used the field hearing to elevate additional challenges older individuals face and how public policies could contribute to solutions. This hearing is a good example of the type of event members of Congress are interested in hosting or participating in during the August recess.
