LeadingAge CAST knows how important it is for providers to choose the best safety technology for their needs, so its Safety Technology Selection Tool has been updated to do just that. This tool includes a matrix of technologies currently on the market—plus a white paper with background on these technologies and an online selection tool. It is one of the 10 Technology Selection Tools CAST offers and has carefully prepared to assist providers.
The Safety Technology product matrix and online selection tool now contain updated information on 45 products, and three new ones to explore:
- EchoCare: This advanced remote monitoring offers a highly accurate, non-wearable solution that facilitates early detection, targeted intervention, and effective prevention.
- Nobi: The smart Nobi lamp helps ensure that older adults can age more independently and carefree by offering fall prevention, quick help, and stylish, smart technology.
- Tango Belt: This wearable Smartbelt designed to enable safer mobility offers automatic sensing and deploys airbags during a fall, alerts caregivers, and measures balance confidence and activity.
Four New Case Studies Show Technology in Action
Curious how others have used these new technologies? Check out four new case studies with learnings from other providers who have implemented falls prevention technologies.
Reducing Falls While Improving Staff Efficiency in Skilled Nursing through Innovative BedSense
The Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) initiated a pilot program in its 40-bed memory care unit using BedSense technology from Momo Medical—and decreased falls by 35%.
BedSense sensors and the BedSense App show live and historical insights on smart devices carried by nursing staff. Nursing supervisors can see resident bed-related fall-risk activity and staff response in real-time from the computer in the nursing office. This information lets the care staff know who needs help, prioritize work, provide person-centered care, and prevent incidents. It also assists with post-fall analysis such as the resident’s sleep-wake patterns, changes to bed mobility, and staff response times.
In a survey, 95% of the memory care staff noted the devices made their jobs easier, helped them to do their jobs better, and improved resident care. The Momo App also empowers staff to provide person-centered care by assisting those residents who are at risk, while letting the other residents sleep. See the full case study.
AI Preventing 84% of Falls, Reducing NHS pressures and Empowering Care Teams
Hartland House in England used Nobi’s Smart AI-powered lamps to prevent falls in its 31-bedroom residential care facility. The Nobi lamps communicate through an intuitive app on the care team’s phones, and the registered care manager has a dashboard in the office to oversee any alerts.
Because the lamps alert care staff immediately, the staff’s average response time has dropped drastically from 57 minutes to under two minutes. By preventing long-lie falls, Nobi significantly contributes to shorter hospital stays, decreasing healthcare costs.
The pilot was so successful that the management team installed the lamps across the whole home just four months into the six-month pilot—and have since cut the incidence of falls by 84%. National Health Service (NHS) Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) funded the project. Review the full case study.
Using AI to Help Detect and Prevent Falls
By piloting SafelyYou Respond™ in its memory care neighborhoods, Village Assisted Living at John Knox Village reduced its fall response time to 1.1 minutes and its residents’ time on the ground to just 6.3 minutes. SafelyYou also helped John Knox Village and Village Assisted Living detect silent falls, where the resident may be injured but recovers and does not report the incident. Safely You is a LeadingAge Corporate Partner.
SafelyYou Respond™ is a unique combination of AI video technology and remote clinical support. AI-enabled sensors mounted in the corner of the apartment detect falls and only record events in the few minutes surrounding an on-the-ground event.
The video enables John Knox Village and Village Assisted Living to assess the severity of falls and circumstances leading up to them. Residents receive more appropriate care, more quickly, including for silent falls where injuries may have gone unknown. Staff can focus on fall prevention. Capturing silent falls protects communities from unfounded abuse and neglect claims.
John Knox Village has now adopted the SafelyYou Respond™ technology for all of its assisted living memory care apartments and considers it a differentiator in a competitive market. Check the full case study for details.
Reducing Recurring Falls and Increased Safety in Senior Living Communities through a Vision-AI System
Care Village Lile Atsuhin in Hiroshima, Japan, has substantially decreased the number of falls by integrating Voxela’s advanced AI video alert system with its existing nurse call systems. Falls, bed-exits, and slips accounted for 66% of all accidents in its nursing care facilities, particularly in the face of staffing shortages.
VCare is an AI-powered fall detection and prevention solution that can be installed in residents’ own homes, private rooms, and common areas and hallways in congregate living settings. VCare solution uses a CMOS vision sensor that detects particular motions, such as bed or chair exits, and notifies a caregiver’s mobile device.
The N-SYSTEM-AI solution seamlessly integrates Voxela’s AI-powered fall detection alerts from cameras into the existing nursing care records N-SYSTEM, ensuring that the care team can adapt without disruption.
By using this system, Care Village Lile gained comprehensive insights into room layouts and care plans. It introduced an in-depth move-in checklist and care plans tailored to individual needs. Care Village Lile has also proactively revised care plans and daily routines that enable residents to sleep better. It has also improved detection and prevention of quiet falls.
