The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) distributed formula allocations for several programs administered by its Office of Community Planning and Development to states and localities. LeadingAge encourages aging services stakeholders to understand how their state and local governments use the funds and to assess avenues for partnerships to preserve and expand affordable senior housing.
A majority of the $5.5 billion of formula allocations is to three programs: the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, and the national Housing Trust Fund. Each of these funds can be used, under their own federal rules but with significant local flexibility about the ultimate use of the funds, to preserve and expand the supply of affordable housing, including for development, rehabilitation, acquisition, operating subsidy, etc.
