On May 21, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) announced a final rule that will update the current Hazard Communication Standard. In order to ensure chemical safety in the workplace, information about the identities and hazards of chemicals must be available and understandable to workers. This OSHA standard requires employers to provide safety data sheets, to provide information and training to employees about chemical hazards in the workplace, and to develop and maintain a written hazard communication program. While many of the changes will apply specifically to chemical manufacturers and importers, there are changes that will affect employers, as well. The updated standards will take effect on July 19, 2024, and LeadingAge will provide members with additional information and analysis.
