CAST-Led LTPAC Health IT Summit Highlighted Need to Collaborate

We hope you were able to attend the 14th LTPAC Health IT Summit last month in Washington, DC, and took away valuable learnings. We convened the summit for the first time this year and expanded its scope to include a wide range of industry players—LTPAC providers, acute care providers, payers, health IT vendors, health information exchange intermediaries, consultants, system integrators, and solution providers.

“Technology Connecting the Healthcare Eco-System” explored new opportunities in the era of health and payment reforms and provided important networking opportunities.

One key takeaway was that collaborating with others in the industry, including acute care providers, payers, and their health IT vendors, can help meet consumer demand for person-centered care. See what speakers had to say, including LeadingAge President and CEO Katie Smith Sloan and speaker John Derr, a co-founder of the LTPAC Health IT Collaborative.

LTC Management, which advances innovative thinking for the long-term care physician, shared impressions from the summit, including thoughts on CMS efforts to align quality initiatives, the lack of funding to develop interoperability, the role that LTPAC medical professionals should play in a risk-based environment, and an HIE that gives its subscribers easy-to-identify benefits.

LeadingAge Magazine also featured several articles building on the summit and its content:

The summit also addressed the new Data Element Library (DEL) from CMS. The DEL was created to increase interoperability among healthcare providers by providing CMS assessment instrument data elements and the health IT standards that support health information collection. Summit attendees engaged with DEL leaders through an interactive demonstration and heard the latest strategy for interoperability.

Missed the summit? If so, make sure you check out the session presentations and handouts on the Summit’s App. Also, please mark your calendar for the next summit, which will be held in the Washington, DC, metro area June 23-25, 2019. Don’t miss it next year; stay tuned for the location, venue, and the new summit branding and name.

LeadingAge Study Finds Evidence for Person-Centered Care in Nursing Homes

A LeadingAge research snapshot released in June shows the benefits of person-centered care and the household model in nursing homes. This approach improved residents’ interactions with their care partners, led to better dining experiences, and reduced depressive symptoms. The LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston conducted the study with Parker Home, a CAST Patron that funded the study. The findings demonstrate opportunities for technology that supports person-centered care.
