Each 75-minute webinar will feature a 45-minute panel presentation and a 30-minute Q&A session.

Session One: The ABCs of Advocacy

Leaders of color attending this webinar will learn the basics of advocacy and how it influences public policy and laws. Panelists will discuss what advocacy is, the role it can play in creating meaningful change, the impact it can have on provider organizations, and the unique perspectives that leaders of color can bring to the process. You’ll gain a practical understanding of the different levels and methods of advocacy and how to navigate the advocacy process.
Effective advocacy at the state level is becoming more important with each passing year. This webinar will help you understand how state advocacy works, how it impacts providers of aging services, and how people at all levels of an aging services organization can become engaged in advocacy. Leaders of color will reflect on their advocacy journeys and will describe how they navigated the advocacy process; the types of advocacy work they pursued; and the practical benefits they, their team members, and residents/clients experienced. LeadingAge state executives will share examples of their advocacy work, explore the importance of building relationships with state legislators and Governor’s office staff, and discuss their engagement with U.S. state senators and congressmen about issues related to their communities.
How can leaders of color get involved in advocacy at the federal level? Panelists participating in this webinar will answer that question after providing an overview of the federal advocacy process. Listen while members of the LeadingAge public policy and advocacy team discuss their federal advocacy agenda and outline ways leaders of color can work with LeadingAge to meet shared advocacy goals. A leader of color will offer guidance on how other leaders can work with the executive and legislative branches at the federal level to advance better national policy that address the needs of their organizations, the people those organizations serve, and the team members who deliver services and supports. You’ll take home useful resources available to LeadingAge members interested in advocacy.
