LeadingAge Interoperability & Prior Authorization Rule Comments

CMS proposed rules in December 2022 on “Advancing Interoperability and Improving Prior Authorization Processes”. If passed, they would establish new requirements for payers – Medicaid, Medicare, Medicaid managed care plans and Medicare Advantage — to create separate Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for providers, patients and other payers to share patient data more easily. In addition, certain payers would be required to build and maintain another API for submitting prior authorizations (PAs) electronically to expedite this activity. CMS also proposes shortening timeframes for PA decisions and payer reporting of key PA metrics. A fact sheet with additional details on the proposed rules can be found here. The LeadingAge submitted its comment letter to CMS on March 13, 2023.
