In a December 4 letter to the Administrator, LeadingAge once again called on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to resolve the outstanding issue of duplicative resident COVID vaccination status reporting. Since October 1, nursing homes have been required to report resident COVID vaccination status through both the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) system and the Minimum Data Set (MDS). NHSN reporting is required weekly, while MDS reporting for each resident is generally done on a quarterly basis. LeadingAge had previously called on CMS to modify reporting requirements in a May letter and highlighted the impending issue of duplication in a September letter, but CMS has failed to take action and made NHSN reporting permanent in a November Home Health payment rule. Continued duplicative reporting wastes time and money as staff are diverted from resident care to satisfy these two requirements.
