The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) published multiple briefs outlining trends and data related to use of Medicaid funded long-term services and supports (LTSS) on November 21.
The data, which includes all ages, show increases in total LTSS users and expenditures with larger increases in home and community-based services when compared with institutional care. It also highlights that more than 86% of LTSS users received some HCSB in 2022, though this group accounting for less than 65% of total Medicaid LTSS spending.
Authors include breakdowns of HCBS spending and utilization by multiple demographic factors including age, rurality, primary language, and ethnicity. This data is timely as states begin to consider future changes to Medicaid programs as the incoming administration has targeted Medicaid as a program ripe for reform.
