Ziegler CFO Hotline Survey Captures Tech Spending Priorities
LeadingAge CAST joins Ziegler in releasing results of the Ziegler CFO Hotline survey, which queried the technology investment priorities of 100 chief financial officers and financial professionals in senior living. Ziegler is a LeadingAge Gold Partner with CAST Focus.
Investment in information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructures such as high-speed Internet connectivity and wireless/wired capabilities topped the list for 2018. Next in line were the following investments:
- Electronic Health/Medical Records (53% of respondents invested)
- Workforce/Staffing Scheduling Systems (48%)
- Resident/Client Access to the Internet and Social Networking Sites (43%)
- Electronic Point of Care/Point of Service Documentation (42%).
The most interesting finding this year is the high percentage of providers who have invested, and/ or plan to invest, in workforce and staff scheduling solutions. This finding highlights the importance of technology in alleviating the workforce problems our members face.

New CAST Case Study: Improving Dementia Care with Social Engagement Tech
A new CAST case study demonstrates how technology can improve quality of life for residents with dementia. “Increasing Engagement, Satisfaction, Physical Performance and Team Efficiencies through Social Engagement Technology” outlines how Presbyterian SeniorCare Network, a LeadingAge member, addressed rising rates of cognitive impairment and dementia. A partnership with LeadingAge CAST Supporter It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L) increased engagement, satisfaction, physical performance, and team efficiencies.
CMS Proposals to Help Skilled Nursing Facilities
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released proposed policy changes and requests for input to prevent information blocking and promote interoperability between hospitals and post-acute care.
Study Finds HIE Lowers Readmissions
Adding to calls for information sharing, a recent study found that 160 Florida hospitals with health information exchange (HIE) had fewer readmissions than did hospitals that are not part of HIE.
How Tech Can Disrupt Senior Living
Recent survey findings indicated that technology has a powerful potential to disrupt senior living—as does older adults’ increased ability to remain independent and out of congregate housing until later in life. Another recent study found that technology spending among Americans age 50 and older will rise to $84 billion a year by 2030.
