Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) introduced the National Social Connection Act on July 18, recognizing that one in three Americans over age 45 are lonely, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The bill would establish an office on social connection policy in the White House to advise the president on how loneliness and social isolation affect the economy, public health, the environment, and community engagement. Further, it would develop an all-of-government strategy to promote connection and launch a public education campaign, as it puts people at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety, and suicide.
