Our expertise spans four primary areas:

Program Evaluation: The Center for Applied Research helps providers of long-term services and supports understand which interventions work for older adults, their families and caregivers. Our work involves collecting descriptive information on a wide range of clinical and workplace improvement practices, conducting qualitative or process analyses to determine how particular interventions are implemented in practice, and assessing the impact of particular interventions on residents, providers and the public at large.

Knowledge Transfer: The Center helps providers and policy makers successfully adopt innovations derived from the best available research. Our work involves synthesizing important research and evidence-based protocols and strategies and then disseminating that information through symposia, workshops, journal articles and published reports.

Policy Analysis: The Center for Applied Research clarifies and interprets the impact of federal and state regulation and policy on the implementation of new care models and on workforce development and improvement. Our work in this area involves preparing and publishing articles in leading health and long-term care journals, preparing briefing papers and testimony for policy forums, collaborating with LeadingAge policy staff on advocacy initiatives, and facilitating information exchanges among a variety of stakeholders.

Epidemiology/Clinical Trials and Observational Studies: The Center designs and implements analytic activities related to secondary data analysis; primary data collection in cross-sectional, retrospective and longitudinal studies; and clinical trials. Our staff conducts analysis of relevant national datasets and other public-use data sources and collaborates with university-based investigators in the design and implementation of observational studies in long-term care settings.
