NQF Endorses Quality Measures for Nursing Homes

On March 3, 2011, the National Quality Forum (NQF), under contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), endorsed  a series of 21 quality measures (QM) for nursing homes. These measures will be used by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on Nursing Home Compare, replacing the existing 19 short and long-stay measures that are scheduled to be taken down April 1, 2011, in the transition data drawn from the MDS 3.0. CMS anticipates posting the new QMs on Nursing Home Compare by the first quarter, 2012. 

 

NQF Endorsed Measures for Nursing Homes

  • Physical therapy or nursing rehabilitation/restorative care for long-stay patients with new balance problem (RAND)
  • Percent of residents experiencing one or more falls with major injury (long stay) (CMS)
  • The percentage of residents on a scheduled pain medication regimen on admission who report a decrease in pain intensity or frequency (short stay) (CMS)
  • Percent of residents who self-report moderate to severe pain (short stay) (CMS)
  • Percent of residents who self-report moderate to severe pain (long stay) (CMS)
  • Percent of residents with pressure ulcers that are new or worsened (short stay) (CMS)
