The bi-partisan Nursing Home Workforce Quality Act, HR 1265, offers a fix to a penalty that has vexed nursing homes for decades. When a nursing home gets a fine over $10,000, regardless of the reason, the home automatically by law loses its ability to train staff to be certified by the state as Certified Nursing Assistants (Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program, or NATCEP). The loss stays in place for two years, regardless of how quickly the home fixes the problem and is back in compliance.

LeadingAge CAST Supporter BlueOrange Compliance generously partnered with CAST to provide this article on how providers can take advantage of opportunities and mitigate risks with smart speakers and voice-controlled devices. It addresses relevant issues in nursing homes, assisted living, and independent living. Guidance on policies, procedures, training, and monitoring are included, along with sample VcD policy and procedure guidance.

Chapter 2: Assessments for the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI)

This chapter had extensive changes, removing all material related to the RUG IV PPS assessment schedule and replacing it with requirements for the Patient-Driven Payment System (PDPM) beginning October 1, 2019.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released the proposed Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 Payment and Policy Changes for Medicare Skilled Nursing Facilities (CMS-1718-P) on April 19. LeadingAge will be submitting comments to CMS during the rule comment period which closes at 5pm EST on June 18. Our draft is available to members for review and we invite feedback for inclusion in our final comments.
