In 2006, the New Jewish Home partnered with Columbia University Teacher’s College to develop a Geriatrics Career Development Program (GCD) on elder care fundamentals, which lets students receive 1 of 5 healthcare certifications after graduation from high school. In 2014, GCD expanded the program to serve out of school/out of work young adults aged 18-24.

Workforce was one of 3 priorities that 250 members talked about on 220 visits to U.S. House and Senate offices during the March 2019 Leadership Summit Lobby Day.  

  • Members shared stories about worker shortages at their communities—particularly the dire impact it is having in rural areas.

LeadingAge joined the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), AHCA/NCAL, and Argentum to kick off its first annual “Careers in Aging Week” in early March.

  • The campaign goal was to make students aware of our field, and we urged members to invite them to their communities or talk to schools about the different jobs in the LTSS area. A number of communities participated in or spotlighted their diverse staff on social media.

June 14 is the deadline to nominate a nurse leader for the Joan Anne McHugh Award for Leadership in Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) Nursing. The winner receives $1,000 to be used for professional development, and a trip to the LeadingAge Annual Meeting & EXPO in San Diego.
