The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory on June 12 on adverse effects being reported in relation to consuming Diamond Shruumz brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies. Twelve incidents of illness, resulting in ten hospitalizations across eight states, have been reported and include symptoms of central nervous system depression with sedation, seizures, muscle rigidity, tremor, abnormal heart rate, abnormal blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, skin flushing, diaphoresis, and metabolic acidosis. The ten incidents of hospitalization included intubation, mechanical ventilation, and admission to intensive care units.
Consumption of cannabis and mushroom extracts, also known as “microdosing,” has been increasing in popularity and has been marketed for promoting health including enhancing memory and cognitive function. It is likely that older adults in our care or their families may be considering or experimenting with microdosing; therefore, it is important to be sure that residents/families and staff are aware of this Health Advisory and know the symptoms of adverse reactions to watch for.
