The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) issued a food safety alert on February 25 regarding a listeria outbreak impacting at least 38 long-term care residents across 21 states. The outbreak appears to be linked to dietary supplements distributed in long-term care and the products have been recalled.
CDC notes that cases in this outbreak date back to 2018, though more than half of the individuals who were affected by this outbreak got sick in 2024 and 2025. CDC states that the outbreak has been investigated several times but never had enough information to identify a source until this year.
The 38 cases include 37 hospitalizations, and 12 individuals have died. All cases occurred in long-term care, as the supplement to which this outbreak is tied is only provided through food distributors to long-term care facilities and not available to the general public.
The Food & Drug Administration has recalled Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes in response. Learn more about the recall here.
