New Tech to Improve Residents’ Health
Several new developments in health care technology can help keep senior living residents healthy and safe. New tech can treat chronic conditions and hand tremors. It can predict falls and pneumonia mortality and improve dental care. Check out these recent developments, reported by McKnight’s Senior Living, that might benefit your residents.
Virtual Reality for Customized Treatment
XRHealth offers a learning system technology for patients with conditions like autism, anxiety, and chronic pain. It collects biometric and motion data such as blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate on a virtual reality headset and uses telehealth to connect with a provider. The data provides insights to a learning system that adjusts the patient’s training and treatment protocols.
The technology will be the first to combine the Apple watch with Apple’s new augmented reality headset Apple Vision Pro to provide closed loop treatment enabled by artificial intelligence (AI), according to a company statement. “Virtual reality to treat chronic conditions could be game-changer” shared the news as well as the benefits of using virtual reality to treat psychosocial disorders, anxiety, loneliness, and depression.
Devices to Predict Falls
Under development is a smartwatch that can predict falls up to 32 days in advance. The charity Age NI in Northern Ireland is testing this tool, which monitors factors like activity levels, heart rate, and sleep and sends caregiver alerts. “New tool detects falls 32 days before they happen” also reports on an Apple Watch app and another AI tool to sense falls and fall risk.
Deep Learning to Predict Pneumonia Mortality
A new deep learning model uses chest radiographs to predict 30-day mortality, says “AI model can predict mortality in community-acquired pneumonia.”
Wearable to Treat Hand Tremors
A new wearable can treat hand tremors for people who have essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease. The new Cala kIQ System determines a patient’s individual tremor signature and stimulates the brain via wrist nerves. Each 40-minute session can provide tremor relief for over an hour. “New wearable device treats Parkinson’s disease tremors” also shared AI tools and platforms that are being used to treat and predict Parkinson’s disease.
AI to Improve Dental Care
A recent study found that an AI model for dentistry could identify gum inflammation with 90% accuracy and as well as a dentist could, according to “Robo-dentistry? New AI model can identify gingivitis, help seniors’ dental care.” The findings open the door to increased dental care for older adults and underserved communities.
