Servi Robot Improves Mealtime at CCRC

BY LeadingAge

Mealtime is easier and residents happier at a continuing care retirement community in Chicago now that a robot is helping to deliver food. A recent article in McKnight’s Senior Living detailed the help that Servi the robot provides to Admiral at the Lake, a Kendal affiliate.

Servi travels between the kitchen and dining room, bringing food and returning used dishes. It is sturdy and carries dishes on three levels. Its battery lasts from eight to 12 hours, and it can make up to 20 deliveries at mealtime, said the article.

While Servi is shuttling dishes, residents receive more attention from staff. Servi means that staff can stay in the dining room with residents rather than making multiple trips to the kitchen and back.

The article noted that the residents at this community are tech-savvy, which made introduction of the robot more appropriate, and that some have even written poems and limericks about Servi.

Nadia Geigler, CEO of The Admiral, gave McKnight’s Senior Living a highly positive assessment of Servi. “Overall, this was a relatively small investment, and the returns—in terms of operational efficiency and resident satisfaction—have been tremendous,” she was quoted as saying.
