During a consultation call with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and other housing stakeholders, LeadingAge shared the non-profit affordable housing provider perspective on new requirements under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
VAWA outlines protections and requirements for people receiving federal housing assistance who are experiencing gender-based violence, like stalking and domestic violence. LeadingAge strongly supports the current HUD-led pilot program to offset increased VAWA transfer requirements by offering the housing provider increased management add-on fees and encouraged HUD to implement a similar pilot in more states. LeadingAge also urged HUD to provide additional technical assistance for housing providers newly covered by VAWA to help put a transfer plan in place before an emergency need is reported.
