For extensive information on social connectedness technologies that increase resident engagement, see the newly updated LeadingAge CAST tool. The Social Connectedness and Engagement Technology Tool includes a white paper with background on these technologies, as well as a selection matrix with technologies currently on the market, an online selection tool, and provider case studies.
It is one of 10 LeadingAge CAST Technology Selection Tools that help providers to learn about valuable technologies, then choose the solution that is the best fit for their organization’s needs.
The tool now includes three new products:
- Zinnia Provides videos that help people with dementia and their caregivers to create meaningful connection, support activities of daily living, and more.
- Independa Offers the Independa Health Hub, the first tele-healthcare service offered on TV, with additional access through a PC or smartphone.
- Uniguest Deploys connected content through simple technology everywhere it is needed, creating engaged communities.
It also includes updated information for 37 products.
New Case Studies
The updated tool features four new case studies that show how other providers use—and benefit from—these technologies.
An “online social wellness platform,” enliveo is intended to reduce loneliness in socially isolated and homebound individuals. Launched in 2010, the VSC provides an enriching and safe virtual space for older adults to connect and socialize. It includes interactive online programs on exercise, virtual travel tours, health workshops, live symphony performances, direct video chats, and more.
A 2020 evaluation found that 80% of VSC participants felt less lonely after participation, and 60% experienced an increased sense of connectedness. An engagement study completed in January 2023 found high percentages of members at risk of loneliness and isolation. A majority of VSC members (63%) participate because they want to engage with others and join the live interactive programs.
- “Increasing Resident and Staff Engagement at The Sharon at SouthPark” The Sharon at SouthPark, a Life Plan Community in Charlotte, NC, implemented the Cubigo platform to streamline communication, enhance service delivery, and elevate the resident experience. Cubigo’s robust integrations with LeadingAge Gold Partner PointClickCare, TheWorxHub, and their point-of-sale system have been instrumental in streamlining processes and improving service delivery across the board.
This collaboration has increased resident engagement and satisfaction, brought significant operational efficiencies, and positioned The Sharon for future growth. The platform attracts 230 weekly active unique users, a significant portion of the community, and residents make 95% of requests directly on the platform.
- “Technology Increases Resident Engagement” Otterbein SeniorLife in Granville, OH, leverages Linked Senior’s technology to deliver person-directed experiences, including games, exercise, music, and art. It customizes content across multiple applications and captures residents’ life stories. Insights generated by Linked Senior help Otterbein team members evaluate resident engagement data across platforms in real time, especially for residents living with cognitive change.
In 2024, residents are asking to participate in engagement programs an average of nearly three times per day. The community averages 66 minutes of resident engagement per day, more than twice the national average.
- “Increasing Staff Efficiencies and Resident Engagement through Easy-to-Use Technology” The Woods, a GreatLife Communities location in Greenfield, WI, has implemented Quiltt. This easy-to-use communications and engagement platform keeps residents, families, and staff informed. Team members appreciated the ability to easily learn Quiltt’s content management features. End-users found the mobile app intuitive and did not require training.
Ultimately, the Woods launched new features sooner than planned. Team members then continued to add new functionality for end-users to enjoy, such as RSVP for events, dining, and popular trivia content.
