February 28, 2025, Washington, DC–Comment from Katie Smith Sloan, president and CEO, LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit providers of aging services, on the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) rescinding the policy on public participation in rulemaking scheduled for March 3, 2025 publication on the Federal Register:
“The HHS action has the potential to significantly harm older adults and the nonprofit providers who serve them in a wide range of care settings and community types. The Secretary’s and the agency’s responsibility is to enhance the health and well-being of all Americans, by providing for effective health and human services, and by fostering sound, sustained advances in the sciences underlying medicine, public health and social services. The opportunities for our nonprofit and mission-driven providers to comment on policies impacting how they care for and serve older adults are a critical and helpful part of the rulemaking process. It is vital to creating and revising effective, efficient, and practical policy.
The possibility that HHS under the Trump White House will eliminate or significantly scale back public comment on policies impacting payment, regulations, safety, operations, and other critical areas is truly troubling–a move we can only hope will not have the negative impact that we fear it might. We will closely monitor its implementation.”
